We are proud to be in the historic former Lowry Air Force Base! This phenomenal architecture lends to a wonderfully unique experience.
-
Located in the heart of the former Lowry Air Force Base (originally Lowry Field), the 22,000-square-foot repurposed hangar-like structure was built in 1942. It features vast amounts of natural light and open space due to its eight steel beams and large windows used in the original construction.
-
Previously referred to as Building #376 (Armament Annex) and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, the building initially functioned as part of the armament school for the U.S. Army Air Corps and later the U.S. Air Force, the only of its kind in the western United States. It trained thousands of armorers and bombardiers during World War II and the Korean War, including training on the Sperry bombsight and the top secret Norden bombsight, a key technology for winning the war.
-
In January 1942, Lowry was tasked by the War Department to train 55,000 men annually in the armament and photography school programs. Built for $6,819 and completed that February, the annex was in use 18 hours daily. By October of that year, photography and armament training was accelerated to seven days a week, 24 hours a day schedules.
-
The photography and armament schools played a significant role in air mission success in Europe and preparation for the Battle of Midway.
-
Designed in the expression of the International style and modern movement, the architectural significance of the hangar, along with the photography and armament school buildings, is associated with the period when military buildings conveyed authority and reflected the growing technological power of the U.S. Army in the 1940s.
