Winter Is Coming. Is Your Car Ready?
-

Colorado winters are no joke. Given how fast the weather can change from "pleasant" to "polar", you want to make sure your car is up to the task. After all, the worst place to discover any unpleasant surprises about your tires, battery, or engine is on the side of the road in 15-degree weather.

-

Before it starts snowing, take some time to check on these parts of your car:

-

Battery

The average battery has a lifespan of about 3 years. This means if you can't remember the last time you replaced it, it's a good idea to start thinking about a new one. Exposure to the cold can speed this up even more, especially if you've been parking outside. No matter how fresh your battery is, bring your car into a garage at the first sign of any battery issues -- such as difficulty starting your ignition.

-

Tires

Your tires have small tread bars built into the grooves that are used to measure how they wear down. Take a look at these bars and make sure they're both visible and evenly worn. If they're worn down completely, it's a sign your tires are nearing the end of their life. Likewise, uneven wear shows that your tires aren't gripping the road properly, which could be a symptom of a larger issue like your alignment or tire pressure. Either way, consider replacing your tires BEFORE you have to deal with slick roads.

-

Fluids

There are several different fluid systems that keep your car running, so it's a good idea to check them all at once. Start with your coolant system to make sure it's able to keep your car warm, before moving on to your oil as well. Given that your windshield wiper fluid is a valuable tool in preventing snow from blocking your visibility, go ahead and check that too!

-

Brakes

You really, really don't want your brakes failing on an icy road, so make sure to check them carefully in the fall. Cold won't necessarily harm your brakes, but you'll want to make sure both your brake pads and brake fluid are in tip-top shape before stress-testing them in some Colorado snow. If either looks like they might need attention, get it immediately.
